A total of €350 were raised during the Vilamoura Nature Run for Mulherendo – the Portuguese Support Association for Women with Endometriosis.
Held last Saturday (April 8), the event brought together 350 people all ages.
There were three routes to choose from (a 6km walk or 11km and 16km runs). Some participants took the event more competitively, although most wanted to enjoy an entertaining morning whilst also keeping active.
The routes took participants to some of Vilamoura’s most stunning areas, from the Parque Ambiental to the Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course.
For every participant, €1 was donated to Mulherendo, an association which plays a key role in helping women diagnosed with endometriosis, a chronic disease which affects roughly 10% (190 million) of reproductive age women and girls globally, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The disease is associated with severe, life-impacting pain during periods, sexual intercourse, bowel movements and/or urination, chronic pelvic pain, abdominal bloating, nausea, fatigue, and sometimes depression, anxiety, and infertility.
There is currently no known cure for endometriosis and treatment is usually aimed at controlling symptoms.
