Vilamoura will host the 42nd edition of the ‘Carnival Regatta’ sailing competition this weekend (February 6-8).
Around 400 sailors will take part – including 200 children from 16 countries who will compete in the Optimist category.
The event will help young sailors prepare for the Optimist World Championship, also to be held at the luxurious resort in June.
The ‘Carnival Regatta’ will also feature races in the Laser 4.7, Laser Radial, 420, Snipe and Dart categories, as well as the first round of the Algarve’s Surf Circuit.
Around 1,000 people are expected, giving local tourism a needed boost during the low season.
“This is another big sporting event that Vilamoura is proud to host, and at a great venue – the awarded Vilamoura Marina,” said Paul Taylor, president of Vilamoura World.
He added that “everything is ready for this event to be a success, and it’s our job to make sure visitors will have good memories of this weekend”.
