Vilamoura Champions Tour was “Portugal’s best equestrian competition ever”

Vilamoura Champions Tour has been named by organisers as the “best horse riding competition ever held in Portugal”.

The event, which took place at the Algarve resort town between September 24 and October 18, attracted a total of 900 horses and 2000 people – including riders, jury members, vets and ferries.

“There is no doubt that we are the number one event in Europe,” said promoter António Moura, adding that apart from the horse riding events, Champions Tour also stands out for being a place to “purchase and sell horses” – a “record-breaker in terms of business”.

This year, rider Laura Kraut (USA), Adeline Hecart (France) and Laura Renwick and Kayleigh Watts (UK) stood out for winning some of the most important prizes, including the Grand Prix and the Ladies World Trophy.

Around €490,000 of prize money was attributed to the winners of the 100 trials that took place – 12 of which counted for the FEI (International Equestrian Federation) rankings.

Organisers Alubox say they are now busy organising Vilamoura Atlantic Tour 2016, which will take place between February 16 and April 3.
