Vila do Bispo dispute goes to Parliament

THE WRANGLE between the Vila do Bispo Câmara and the ICNB about the embargo on the construction of several villas in legal urbanisations has gone to the national parliament.

Mendes Bota, the social democrat MP who represents the Algarve, presented a special petition to the president of the Parliament on December 23, requesting the Ministro do Ambiente, Ordenamento do Território e Desenvolvimento Regional, the environment minister, to be available for an urgent meeting with the Vila do Bispo Câmara president and the board of the ICNB, in a joint effort to find a solution for the dispute.

According to Mendes Bota this meeting must focus on a legal solution that “minimises the collateral damage affecting dozens of people who acted in good-faith”.

The petition follows a public denouncement from the Vila do Bispo Câmara (see The Resident edition of December 7), who accused the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina (PNSACV), the regional environmental authority, of “violating the law” when ordering the villa construction embargo.

The case was first reported by The Resident in July after being contacted by a group of residents and property owners who had seen their villa construction embargoed by the regional park, despite the fact that they had respected all the national regulations.
