Victorious despite poor performance

A great first half performance from Portimão goalkeeper Ventura was largely responsible for keeping his team in the game against a very much superior Beira-Mar eleven at the Stadium of the Algarve on Sunday afternoon.

Strengthened by substitutes Pena and debutant Dong Fangzhuo, the home side returned in better shape after the interval. Seven minutes into the second period of play, Venezuelan striker Pena found himself in the right place at the right time when fellow forward Calvin Kadi appeared to chase a lost cause down the right flank.

However, as the Beira-Mar defence froze, the South African caught the ball before it crossed the byline and whipped in a fierce cross which found the back of the net via the hovering Pena’s stomach! Thereafter Litos’ men stood their ground to take their second ‘home’ win in as many weeks, albeit somewhat fortuitously.

“We have already delivered better performances this season without winning, and today, without playing well, we gained all three points”, manager Lito said afterwards.

Chinese international and former Manchester United player Fangzhuo also enjoyed his first appearance for the club.

“It was a very important result for the team,” he said. “I was not at my best after a long injury related absence, but I will work hard to earn a regular place. I like this experience in Portuguese football at a great club in a beautiful part of the country.”

Portimonense now find themselves on seven points after six games and, more importantly, five points clear of Marítimo and Rio Ave, who currently occupy the two relegation places.

Next up for the Algarveans will be Nacional on Madeira on Sunday afternoon at 4pm. Skip Bandele
