Very serious political situation has got a lot worse – former president

Former Portuguese president Cavaco Silva has said that the political situation in this country, which he described two months ago as “very dangerous”, has deteriorated since then “much more than (he) anticipated”. The 83-year-old did not elaborate. His comments came at the end of the launch of the book “Chronicles of a Stagnant Country“, written by PSD parliamentary leader and university professor Joaquim Miranda Sarmento. Asked whether he agreed with Miranda Sarmento’s analysis, Cavaco Silva said: “I understand that I should not make any comments”. It is very much what he said two months ago: “I have been asked a lot to speak about the political situation in our country. But I consider that, on my part, it is not the time to speak, because I consider that our political situation is, at this moment, very dangerous and I don’t want to throw oil on the fire.”
