Around 150 car and van owners in the Sotavento (eastern Algarve) woke up this week to find vandals had smashed the windows of their vehicles.
In one night alone, nearly 100 cars were affected.
The trail of damage stretched from Fuseta, in the borough of Olhão, all the way to Vila Real de Santo António – and although police have intimated they know the gang behind it, they have yet to make any arrests.
“I didn’t hear anything during the night,” one elderly lady told reporters from the Hortas area of VRSA. “But when I went to the car, I saw I had a window smashed. I had already heard of all the vandalism, but had no idea it would happen to me.”
The woman’s car was parked outside her home in a “quiet area”, she added.
By Thursday, the gang’s trajectory was reported to have moved back geographically, centring more on the area around Tavira.
The attacks are all reported to take place in the early hours of the morning.
