Valverde Bowls holds Championship Finals Day

By Alan Preece
With the sun shining from a clear blue sky and a good crowd of members, the Valverde Lawn Bowls Club in Almancil held their club championship finals day on Saturday (March 15).
In the morning session, Sue Hunt, last year’s ladies champion, retained her title by beating Penny Henley with a final score of 21 – 6. Sue has been playing well all season and proved to be unbeatable.
The doubles competition was a close one with Keith Henley and Stuart Banks eventually beating Brian Walker and David Russell (21 – 17).
A barbecue lunch was then enjoyed on the terrace of the Don Camillo restaurant.
After lunch, Keith Henley, the club captain, won his second title of the day after defeating Ken Rawlins in the men’s singles (21 – 8).
The drawn triples match was a very exciting one with the score remaining close until the last few ends. Margaret Wilson, Tim Smith and Alan Hyatt beat Brian Walker, David Laing and Sylvia Toyne by 18 – 13. Alan and Sylvia are both inexperienced bowlers who played well and enjoyed the support of an enthusiastic crowd.
The trophies were presented by club chairman David Russell and by vice-captain Jeff Perry.
Valverde is welcoming new players to the club. For more information, contact Jen Preece on 282 332 628.
