THE PORTUGUESE government has finally agreed to include a vaccine against cervical cancer in the national vaccination programme with effect from September 2008.
Under the government’s plan, young women born in 1995 will be the first ones to be vaccinated in September of next year. In 2009, the plan is to include only girls born in 1996 and in 2010 young women born in1997.
From 2009 to 2011, all girls aged 17 are also to be included in the vaccination programme. The government’s decision will be reviewed in 2011 to analyse its impact in the fight against this type of cancer.
