Vaccine task force coordinator concludes Infarmed interventions: “We have won the first battle”

Repeating his message of yesterday, vaccine task force coordinator vice-admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo has told the Infarmed meeting that Portugal has ‘won the first battle against the virus’, by fully vaccinating already over 81% of the population. By the end of the month that percentage should have risen to above 85%, which in his mindset is sufficient for group protection if not herd immunity. Youngsters have overwhelmingly responded to the call to be vaccinated, said the vice-admiral, with more than 86% of those from the ages of 12 already well into the vaccination process. Over half have received two doses – and Portugal still has a stock of a million doses of vaccine  in reserve.
