Faro’s Rui Machado leads a three-pronged Portuguese challenge over this weekend to try and join Frederico Gil via qualifying in the main draw of the US Open which begins on Monday.
If the 26-year-old Algarvean is successful against Australia’s Nick Landahl in round one he will then face either American Ryan Harrison or Frenchman Jonathan Dasniers de Veigy in his bid to reach the tournament proper for a third time in succession.
Leonardo Tavares and Michelle Brito are the other Portuguese players involved.
