URGENT TAVIRA FIRE APPEAL

The Algarve Tourism Board has made an appeal to hoteliers in the region for food and drink donations to be delivered to tourist information offices in Faro, São Brás de Alportel, Olhão, Tavira and Monte Gordo by 5pm today, so that the goods can be taken to the Tavira Bombeiros Headquarters.

Alternatively, food and drink donations can be taken by the population directly to the Tavira Bombeiros Headquarters. Food donations: fruit, sandwiches, cakes, juices, milk and water.

Around 600 firefighters from across Portugal have been battling various fire fronts in the Serra do Caldeirão area of Tavira for more than 48 hours.

More than 100 people have been evacuated from their homes as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, another appeal has been made by British resident Chris Wright from the Olhanense Expat Supporters Group and who lives in the eastern Algarve.

“The Bombeiros are in desperate need of bottles of drinking water and fruit juices.

“The Olhanense Expat Supporters Group is donating €100 worth of the above but if you would like to add a donation please let Chris Wright know how much and you can settle-up with us in due course.

“We will then purchase additional goods as requested by the Tavira Bombeiros.

Alternatively you can donate goods (no money please) to fire stations near you.”

The firefighters, supported by nearly 200 vehicles, are battling the worst fires to devastate the region for many years.
