Upheaval in Portimão

The Algarve’s only ‘Championship’ Liga Orangina club did not enjoy the best of weekends.

As the players were preparing for the important match against fellow strugglers União Madeira, news emerged late on Friday afternoon that coach Carlos Mozer had stepped down following three successive defeats.

And 24 hours later, the team under the temporary guidance of long-time stalwart Jose Augusto did little to redeem the reputation of their departed mentor.

Despite taking an early lead through Ruben against the visiting islanders, hostile strikes either side of the interval condemned the hapless Algarve ensemble to its ninth league defeat of the season.

If Portimonense are to move off the bottom of the division and maintain its second tier status, a cool head in charge of capable hands are needed.

At the time of going to press former manager Carlos Azenha appeared most likely to take up the reigns again. Should he do so, a baptism of fire awaits Monday evening when much improved title contenders Moreirense are the visitors.
