UPDATE: Monchique fire is “uncontrollable,” says mayor

With the Algarve’s 15 fire corporations all battling flames this afternoon, Monchique mayor Rui André has said the fire that broke out in Tojeiro today (October 1) is “uncontrollable” and “threatening several homes”.

The fire has three critical points but firefighters are focusing mainly on the north of the area, where most of the houses are located.

According to Lusa news agency, 154 firefighters are at the scene, supported by one helicopter and four planes.

The fire broke out at around 12.30 am in Tojeiro, an area of the municipality of Monchique that is around six kilometers from Portimão racetrack.
