Containers must be strong, durable, and provide sufficient space for pets to stand, sit, and lie down comfortably. Feeding and watering are essential during transport, with provisions tailored to the specific needs of each animal. Adequate care and attention are also crucial before and after transportation, including access to veterinary care if required.
Handling procedures are rigorously regulated, emphasising proper training and qualifications for all personnel involved in the transportation process. Airlines and freight forwarders must possess suitable equipment and facilities to handle animals safely. Temperature control is paramount, ensuring animals are not subjected to extreme temperatures. Pets usually travel in dedicated compartments on passenger flights, separate from luggage, and the cargo hold is pressurised and equipped with controlled lighting and temperature, creating a conducive environment for pets.
Compliance with import/ export regulations, permits, certifications, and animal welfare laws of origin, destination, and transit countries is imperative and must never be overlooked.
