Mardi Gras returns to New Orleans
TENS OF thousands of revellers gathered in New Orleans for the climax of the first Mardi Gras since Hurricane Katrina struck six months ago. Tourists and locals lined the streets on February 28 at the height of the celebrations, to cheer on the parades. The mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagin, said the carnival was a chance for the city to lift its spirits. Some residents saw it as an opportunity to publicise ongoing problems in poorer districts that are still in ruins. Others criticised the decision to go ahead as the carnival has been cancelled before in times of national emergency.
