UNICRE charges

Petrol stations may soon refuse to accept payments for fuel with debit or credit cards due to an increase of the rates by the financial institution managing and issuing payment cards in Portugal.  Unicre said the increase of 0.2 cents per litre since January 1 was inevitable as it hadn’t updated its rates since 2006.

However, the Associação Nacional de Revendedores de Combustíveis (ANAREC), the association of fuel resellers in Portugal, says it is considering proposing a temporary suspension of payments by debit and credit cards to its associates.

As an example, ANAREC said that for €25 spent on fuel, 30% to 35% go to UNICRE.
