Unemployment in Portugal could hit nearly nine per cent in 2009, the European Union has warned.

Both Portuguese government and EU forecasts predict that the unemployment rate in Portugal could exceed average estimates of 7.9 per cent issued by the International Organisation for Employment.

Government figures released last week revealed that unemployment would likely reach 8.5 per cent, while the European Commission warned the figure could climb to 8.8 per cent.
