The Algarve has registered its highest increase in unemployment in recent months, with further increases predicted for 2009 because of the effects of the economic crisis on tourism and construction, the region’s main industries.
According to figures released by the Instituto de Emprego e Formação Profissional (IEFP), the unemployment office, the number of people registered unemployed in the Algarve increased by 15.8 per cent in November 2008, compared to the same period in 2007. Between October and November last year, the increase in the region was 35.8 per cent.
The deputy director of the regional IEFP, Maria Fernanda Santos said: “The situation is not positive and has put us on alert, especially as the next few months are defined as being the low season for tourism.”
According to Maria Santos, 76.2 per cent of new unemployed people have finished temporary work contracts.
“We are facing a difficult period and the IEFP has a series of measures to help, but we cannot create jobs, these must be supplied by companies and other entities,” she said.
