Unemployed foreigners

The number of jobless foreigners in Portugal had increased to 18,735 at the end of January. The majority of those registering in job centres were based in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo areas. According to statistics from the Institute of Employment and Professional Formation (IEFP), the number of unemployed rose by around two per cent in January, compared to the previous month when there were 18,393 people without work. In all, 12,390 foreigners signed on in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, 2,557 foreigners were registered as unemployed in the north of the country, 1,422 in the centre and 1,779 in the Algarve. The IEFP also noted that the largest groups of unemployed immigrants were from Cape Verde (2,938), Brazil (2,931), Angola (2,790) and the Ukraine (2,395).
