Ukrainians in Portugal ‘taken by surprise’ as Russian military allowed to participate in in judo competition

Portugal’s Ukrainian community has been dumbfounded to discover that Russian military personnel have been allowed to take part in a judo competition taking place in Odivelas this weekend. “Unfortunately, we learned about these ‘athletes’ participation in the tournament very late, too late to organise a peaceful protest”, said Pavlo Sadokha, president of the association of Ukrainians in Portugal. “Next week, we will hold a protest outside the Ministry of Sports and Youth of Portugal to prevent such incidents in the future”. In the meantime, tomorrow (Sunday), members of the community are being encouraged to attend the competition and show their disapproval. The Russians are taking part as ‘neutral’ competitors – not representing either a country, or showing a national flag – but the rules specified that no Russians could take part if they were part of the Russian military and/ or if they supported the illegal invasion of Ukraine.
