Uber’s first two months in Algarve “exceeded expectations”

Though its expansion to the Algarve was not welcomed by everyone – namely the traditional taxi sector – smartphone taxi service Uber says its first two months in the region have “exceeded expectations”.

In its first 60 days in the Algarve, Uber has been used by people from over 60 countries.

In a statement, the service says it is most commonly used by “Americans, Brits and French” though it has also driven people from as far away as Indonesia, Uruguay, South Africa and New Zealand.

Indeed, Uber says it was “immediately well-received” not only by the Algarveans but also the four million tourists who chose the region for their holidays.

The App-based taxi service is used mostly at night and early morning, with 55% of all fares being registered between 8pm and 5am. The main night-time destination is Vilamoura, while at day time it varies much more.

An image posted on Uber’s shows that while the service is only available in Faro, Albufeira and Vilamoura, clients use it to travel all over the Algarve to as far west as Lagos and as far east as Vila Real de Santo António.

Uber, which today operates in over 500 cities, said that the Algarve as one of Europe’s main holiday destinations could not be left out of its services.
