Uber smartphone taxi service is out, confirms court

American smartphone taxi service Uber has been banned from Portugal by Lisbon’s Court of Appeal.

The decision was confirmed by Antral, the national taxi association that lodged an injunction against Uber in April.

Antral has asked Uber to “respect the decision” in order to avoid scenes of violence among taxi drivers like those that happened recently in France.

Uber was banned by a French court in October, but has been operating while challenging the decision.

The American company’s refusal to stop operating led taxi drivers last week to block roads to the French capital’s airports, overturn cars and burn tires to press for the scheme to be abolished, reports Reuters news agency.
