The two men arrested for the murder of Irish tourist Paul Houston in Alvor on September 6 have been charged with homicide and robbery.
A 26-year-old Brazilian man was remanded in custody and a 19-year-old, also Brazilian, is under partial arrest.
In a statement, the Polícia Judiciária told the Algarve Resident: “The exhaustive, lengthy and careful investigation work carried out in the last few days, with the help of other police forces and the intense collection of information, allowed the perpetrators to be identified, found and detained, as well as other elements of the group.”
According to the police, the pair were arrested by Portimão’s criminal investigation branch of the PJ on Wednesday, September 16, as they prepared to leave the region.
A police spokesman told Portuguese news agency Lusa that one of the suspects had an airline ticket to Brazil while the other had a bus ticket to Lisbon.
The spokesman added that the men were arrested without resistance in Lagos, “where they had been living for some time”.
Paul Houston, 51, from Londonderry, Northern Ireland, had been on holiday in Alvor, near Portimão with his wife Celine and another couple. The prominent businessman was a father of four and the president of Greencastle Golf Club in Co. Donegal.
