Two Faro police officers arrested in drug bust

Two PSP police officers from Faro’s district command have been arrested on suspicion of belonging to a criminal organisation which smuggled hundreds of kilos of drugs into Portugal from Latin America.

They were arrested following a PJ criminal police drug bust in Azambuja (north of Lisbon), which led to the seizing of 375 kilos of cocaine which were hidden inside a container filled with bananas. Two other people were also arrested.

Jornal de Notícias reports that PJ police spotted the group smuggling the drugs into Portugal and transporting the cargo to a warehouse in Azambuja, where the four men were caught red-handed and were arrested.

A PSP police spokesperson said that the police force’s national board will soon begin disciplinary proceedings which could lead to the suspension of the two officers.

All four men have been remanded in custody.
