Two people have been killed and four others are in serious conditions in Portimáo hospital after another hideous traffic accident on the Algarve’s “death road”, the EN125, at the crossroads between Alcantarilha and Lagoa.
With the road still cut off at 2.30pm today, it is not yet known whether the head-on accident involved holidaymakers or residents, nor has the nationality of the victims been released.
According to Rádio Renascença, the accident happened just before 1pm and involved two cars.
The two dead were thought to have been travelling in one of the cars, while the other victims were in the second car.
Eleven emergency services vehicles are at the scene, along with firemen and INEM rescue workers.
This is yet another accident on a road that was already notorious for traffic-related deaths before tolls on the parallel A22 motorway forced more drivers into using it.
The campaign aimed at getting politicians to rescind the tolls continues to run high, especially during the summer as this is when traffic on the EN125 increases, habitually taking the number of road traffic accidents with it.
