Twenty-year-old exchange student “sexually assaulted” in Faro

PJ police are looking for a man who sexually assaulted a 20-year-old Polish student while she was on her way home from a night out in Faro.

The attack happened in the Penha area in the early hours of Saturday morning (June 4).

National tabloid Correio da Manhã says the man grabbed the student and dragged her into a “secluded area”.

CM adds the woman was “sexually abused” but able to escape before being raped.

She was still “in a state of shock” when PSP police arrived at Faro Hospital.

The young woman, who is studying at Faro’s University of the Algarve as part of the Erasmus exchange programme, was due to undergo further exams to determine the extent of her abuse.

So far, no requests for assistance have been received by Poland’s Embassy and Consulate in Portugal.

“We are willing to provide whatever support is necessary,” said Elidérico Viegas, the Honorary Consul of Poland in the Algarve, more habitually heard from as the head of the region’s hoteliers association AHETA.
