TV rates

CONSUMERS FACE an extra five per cent VAT charge on the television rates they pay as part of their monthly electricity bill.

The proposal from the Portuguese government is included in the annual budget for 2008 and, if approved by the national parliament, will represent an extra five millions euros for public funds, based on the total amount raised in 2006.

The television rate in 2006 was 1.60 euros a month, representing an income of 100 million euros for RTP, the state television company. This year, consumers have paid 1.71 euros a month.
