Triathlete Rafael Sá is feared dead after he ‘disappeared’ underwater during a 750-metre swim in Vila Nova de Cerveira, near the Spanish border, on Sunday.
The 23-year-old apparently called out for help around the 200-metre mark, but support kayaks could not reach him before he sank beneath the waters of the Minho river.
Maritime police divers using sonar equipment have been searching ever since, so far to no avail.
The triatholon Sá was competing in involved 178 sports enthusiasts from Spain and Portugal.
