UK passport glitch

If you are a UK citizen and your passport is up for renewal, be aware that online passport applications in Britain have been withdrawn, due to a series of computer problems. It appears there is a backlog of around 5,000 applications, caused by technical problems, which could affect the travel plans of hundreds of people. We urge people to get their applications in early, as problems can crop up, even with written applications, and who needs last minute hitches spoiling the start of a much-needed holiday?

• For information about renewing British passports in Portugal call the British Embassy in Lisbon on 213 924 000 or British Consulate in Portimão on 282 490 750.

Online check-in

British Airways extended its online check-in facility on July 25, to include children and infants. Parents can log on to the airline’s website, www.ba.com, up to 24 hours in advance of their flight, choose their seats and check-in the whole family. They can also print out boarding passes to take to the airport. The service is available on around 97 per cent of British Airways’ routes.

New Moscow flights

Bmi and the Russian airline Transaero will begin services between Heathrow and Moscow Domodedovo airport from October 29, with both offering a daily return service. These new services will double the number of daily return flights on the route.
