Train link open

Prime Minister Durão Barroso has inaugurated a new high speed rail link which nearly halves the travel time between Lisbon and the Algarve. “Until now, the Algarve and the south of the country have been historically forgotten, or discriminated against, in terms of railways,” the Prime Minister said.

The government has spent more than 500 million euros on modernising the 300kms of track between Lisbon and Faro. The new track allows trains to travel at faster speeds, reducing the time it takes to reach Faro from Lisbon by train to two hours and 50 minutes from the previous five hours.
