Train kills man in horrific level crossing accident

A 70-year-old Portuguese man died yesterday afternoon (June 17) after being struck by a train on Portimão’s level crossing.

The accident happened when the man tried to cross the railway as warning signals (involving flashing lights and alarm bells) were ongoing, a source from PSP police told the Resident.

By the time the man realised he couldn’t make it across in time, it was too late, said the source.

The victim was struck head-on and was “projected off the railway track”.

The accident happened at around 5.30pm in the bustle of rush hour, confirmed the regional rescue operations control CDOS Faro.

Authorities raced to the scene, but the man was already dead by the time they arrived.

Traffic in the area was cut off for an hour.
