Tragedy in Portimão as beach restaurant owner dies trying to put out fire

A 54-year-old man died last night (June 8) after trying to put out a fire that broke out at O Branquinho, the beach restaurant he owned at Três Castelos beach in Praia da Rocha.

Authorities were alerted to the fire at around 10.30pm. By the time they arrived and removed Carlos Santana from inside the restaurant, he had already suffered cardiac arrest.

Firefighters and INEM emergency services tried to revive him, but to no avail. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

PJ criminal police are investigating the fire. Reports Jornal de Notícias, no evidence of foul play has been found.

The restaurant sustained considerable damage from the flames.

Meanwhile, the victim’s Facebook page has been flooded with messages from friends and family, many describing him as a “good man and a great friend”.

The cause of death is unknown, although one friend commented that he suffered from asthma.
