Around 1,500 piglets have died, or been injured, in a freak fire that broke out in Estremoz, near Évora, early this morning. The blaze in a barn containing around 3,000 piglets appears to have started following an electrical short circuit. The pig farmer was able to open the pens to release almost half his stock, but now he is faced with elevated damages as he sifts through the consequences. The fire was brought under control within three hours from being called in.
