Tragedy as fisherman swept to death in Aljezur

Tragedy struck the Algarve’s fishing community once again last week as a fisherman in his 40s was swept to his death by a wave near Arrifana beach in Aljezur.

The man was fishing with two friends at the base of a 100-metre cliff on Friday afternoon when a wave swept them all into the water.

A fourth fisherman who witnessed the scene was able to pull the man out of the water, but he was already in cardiorespiratory arrest and resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

The other two were able to climb up a rock and wait for help.

Firefighters tried rescuing them by land, but an Air Force helicopter had to be called to lift them to safety and take them to Faro Hospital.

They were suffering from “hypothermia and feeling scared, which is understandable after what happened”, said Lagos port captain Conceição Duarte.

He added that the fishermen are all believed to be locals.
