Following tradition, the village of Cortelha, located in the heart of the Serra do Caldeirão in the municipality of Loulé, will once again light its Christmas madeiro (bonfire) next to its cork nativity scene.
The community of Cortelha will gather today at 16:00 on the Largo da Associação to rekindle the Christmas bonfire.
According to the Associação dos Amigos da Cortelha, the initiative aims to mark a time of union, festivity, and, above all, hospitality.
“This is an initiative that provides a great moment of fraternisation among all the inhabitants, but also tourists, who at this time of year come up the mountains and experience the Christmas traditions of the Algarve interior”, says the organisation. The Cortelha Christmas madeiro is a meeting point where stories are shared
Next to the Cortelha nativity scene, the bonfire will remain lit until January 6, 2023, the Epiphany, to “warm baby Jesus and unite the population in a family and community environment”.
