A German man was caught trying to leave New Zealand with 23 geckos and 20 skinks (lizards) hidden in his underwear earlier this month.
Hans Kubus, 58, was caught at Christchurch Airport after checking in, when customs staff found a package containing the reptiles in his underwear, as well as a gecko in a rolled up sock, during a search.
Court prosecutor Mike Bodie said: “The package contained eight separate compartments separating various gecko and skink species.”
A total of 24 geckos were found from five different species, as well as 20 skinks from two species.
The German admitted trading geckos and taking geckos and skinks from the wild without a permit.
