The body of a tourist from the Czech Republic was found floating face down in an area known as Estaquinha, near Albandeira beach, Lagoa, on Friday afternoon.
According to Correio da Manhã, a retired naval sergeant discovered the body in a tunnel in the rocks.
The man had been practising “free-diving” – the sport that relies on the diver’s ability to hold his breath until resurfacing without the use of breathing apparatus.
Eyewitnesses told the paper the dead man, aged 50, had been “eating and drinking” before he went into the water.
