Portugal is moving on from being 'all about sun and sea': slowly but surely the 'year round tourism' ambition is being conquered

Tourist accommodation records 30 million guests in 2023

Portugal’s tourist accommodation sector in 2023 recorded 30 million guests and 77.2 million overnight stays, corresponding to increases of 13.3% and 10.7% respectively on the 2022 figures and surpassing levels recorded in 2019, the last full year before the Covid-19 pandemic, to reach new all-time highs, the National Statistics Institute (INE) said on Wednesday. According to preliminary data on activity in the sector in 2023, published by INE, overnight stays by people not resident in Portugal predominated, at 53.8 million, or 69.7% of total overnight stays in 2023, up 14.9% on the year, while the domestic market contributed 23.4 million overnight stays (up 2.1%).
