Tourism trends

Figures released by the national tourismboard for 2009 show a changing trend in the tourism industry.

The national, Spanish and French markets registered an increase of 2.2 per cent, 5.4 per cent and 1.6 per cent respectively, with a total of 13 million holidaymakers choosing Portugal last year and accounting for 36.7 million overnight stays.

The Algarve and Madeira Island, destinations favoured by the British, registered a decrease in the number of overnight stays, – 9.1 per cent and -11.2 per cent respectively.

According to the national tourism board, revenue generated from tourism up to November last year equated to 6.41 billion euros.
