Tourism leaves 80% of Portugal’s wetland areas at risk

Environmental association Zero signalled World Wetlands Day this week highlighting the risks posed to Portugal’s wetland areas by “urban and touristic property development”. Saying Portugal’s wetlands need plans in place to properly safeguard them, Zero’s Carla Graça said: “They are generally areas on the coast, like estuaries, but also in the Algarve.” As many as 80% of Portugal’s wetland areas are being compromised, she said.
