Algarve tourism boss Nuno Aires has said he is in favour of regionalisation and considers the Algarve to be one of the regions that contributes most to the gross domestic product (GDP) of Portugal.
The president of the Algarve tourism board, ERTA, said: “I am a true supporter of regionalisation. I believe that there is no better way to address issues such as transport, health and tourism than at regional level.”
He added: “There is nothing better than having local people and authorities decide the region’s needs and put into practice policies that are distinctly Algarve focused.”
He said that tourism activity in the region represents about 10 per cent of the country’s GDP and approximately 60 per cent of the tourism revenues in the country are generated in the Algarve.
“What the Algarve generates in revenue for the country is far superior to what we receive from the government,” he said.
“The government should make adjustments to the funds the region receives for its promotion and production.”
