Tour of the Algarve back again

Tour of the Algarve back again

The 40th Tour of the Algarve (Volta ao Algarve) – the region’s renowned annual road bicycle racing event – will be taking place between February 19 and 23 and be divided, as ever, into five stages in a varied and balanced route.
Race manager Cândido Barbosa explained that this year’s Tour of the Algarve will once again be a “great sporting event”.
“It is the cycling event in Portugal that has the biggest impact on an international level, always presenting notable groups of cyclists,” he said, claiming the 2014 edition will “make the whole region feel proud”.
He also stressed the socioeconomic benefits that the event brings to the Algarve due to the participation of internationally-famous cyclists and confirmed that further details on these and other details will be revealed in the coming weeks.
Still, some teams are already confirmed. Among the highlights are: Danish cycling team Tinkoff-Saxo, which will be presenting two Portuguese cyclists, Sérgio Paulinho and Bruno Pires, to the Algarve; Italian team Lampre-Merida, which will also be presenting two Portuguese cyclists, including World champion Rui Costa and Nélson Oliveira; and Belkin Pro Cycling, which will be bringing along its rising star Wilco Kelderman.
