England’s young lions were given a lesson in the finer skills of football when they lost 2-0 to Portugal at Albufeira on Saturday.

England Youth Development Officer Ray Clemence watched the youngsters struggle against the skilful Portuguese, particularly winger Kaki who is on Chelsea’s books.

England debutant Thomas Ince, watched by his father Paul, the first black player to captain England, showed some useful touches and Louis Laing (Sunderland) looked strong in defence.

Filipe Barros (FC Porto) scored twice within three minutes midway through the first half. Emmauel Frimpong (Arsenal) added some much needed skill when he came on in the second period.

Israel and France fought out a 1-1 draw. On Sunday England lost 2-0 France whilst Portugal ensured they would win the tournament with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Israel.
