A GNR officer has been handed a two-year suspended jail sentence over what a judge termed “torture”. Thirty-eight-year-old Francisco Aguiar has also been ordered to pay his victim €2,550 in compensation. “A simple punch can constitute the crime of torture,” the judge told Aguiar who is reported to have attacked his victim “to make him own up for thefts of copper”. Described as a man with an unsullied record who had simply “lost his head”, Aguiar is now reported to be considering an appeal.
