Top wine award too close to call

Two Algarve wineries took the accolade of Best Wine of the Algarve 2010 after judges were unable to place one above the other during the competition held at Fatacil in Lagoa.

The  Grace Touriga Nacional 2008 from the Quinta dos Vales winery in Estômbar and the Vida Nova Rosé 2009 from the Adega do Cantor winery in Guia both picked up the award for the best wine of 2010 during the third Algarve wine competition on August 24.

Two of the partners of the Adega do Cantor, Nigel and Max Birch, were present at the prize giving ceremony. Nigel Birch said: “Our continuous efforts to produce the best wine the region has to offer has finally been recognised and we are very proud to receive theses prizes.”

A spokesman from Quinta dos Vales said: “This prize shows that we are on the right track and the team at Quinta dos Vales will be even more motivated to conquer the coming challenges.”

Both wineries also picked up other awards, with Quinta dos Vales taking home the gold medal for the Grace Vineyard White 2009 and a silver medal for the Primeira Selecção Rosé 2009.

Adega do Cantor received a gold medal for their Vida Nova Branco 2009 and for the Vida Nova Reserva 2008.

The competition was judged by acclaimed critics including sommeliers from Michelin star restaurants of the Algarve and the heads of national wine fraternities, with seven gold and five silver medals being awarded in the categories of red, white and rosé.
