Top bowler Gary Ellis of Manchester is returning to the Algarve to defend his title in this year’s Oceânico Bowls Masters Portugal 2010 from October 9 to 15.
Gary Ellis won last year’s tournament, receiving his trophy from world renowned golfer Retief Goosen.
“This year, the competition is bigger and better. May the best man (or lady!) win,” said Gary. “I’m really looking forward to it.”
Twenty five UK top crown green bowlers have qualified for the Oceânico Bowls Masters Portugal 2010 by winning selected tournaments and will be flying out for the prestigious event, which will be televised for Sky Sports.
Big names who may pose a threat to Gary’s title include Graeme Wilson, the current Yorkshire county captain and runner up of the Oceânico Bowls Masters Portugal in 2009, Noel Burrows, aka “The Legend”, who is probably the all-time best bowler, and Simon Coupe, probably the number three in the game.
Lynn Pritchatt, who has won the Waterloo ladies crown green competition six times, and Kerry Brown, winner of the 2010 Bridlington Ladies competition, are also likely to pose a tough challenge.
With more than 90 bowlers playing this year, the event is expected to attract a large turnout.
The overall winner will take home 2,000 Euros with cash prizes down to the last 64. As well as the prize-giving gala dinner, organisers have a number of events planned for October 15 such as consolation bowling events and fun prize draws at the Amendoeira Clubhouse.
Sponsors for the Oceânico Bowls Masters Portugal 2010 are the Algarve Tourism Board, along with gold sponsors The Resident Group, Taylor Bowls and Auto Rent.
