Some of the best sailors from around the world are in Vilamoura competing for a spot in this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The resort is currently hosting the 470 Olympic Sailing World Championship as well as the RS:X European & Youth European Championship of Windsurfing – both of which provide qualification for the upcoming Olympics and are taking place until Saturday (March 13).
“Vilamoura has become vital in the path to Tokyo,” says Vilamoura Sailing in a statement to the press.
“For most Olympic class sailors, it will be in the waters of Vilamoura where they will have their last chance to book their spot in the 2021 Olympic Games,” it adds.
Vilamoura has also been selected to host the Finn European Championship between April 10 and 16 which was due to be held in France but was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Said Balázs Hajdú, president of the International Finn Class Association: “This ability to organise, in just a few days, a championship of this importance shows the professionalism of the Vilamoura Sailing team and gives us confidence that our sailors will have a great and fair championship.”
Vilamoura Sailing CEO and founder Nuno Reis added that Vilamoura was selected out of over six bids from other prestigious organisations, proving how the resort has established itself in the eyes of sailors around the world.
