Luís Neves, national director of Portugal’s criminal investigation police agency, the PJ, has warned today that we are living in complicated times of threat to the rule of law due to fake news – stressing the need to maintain levels of quality and independence of public service. Speaking at the opening session of the international conference “The future of the public media service”, organised in Lisbon by the RTP Opinion Council, Neves stressed the PJ’s special responsibilities in the face of ‘hybrid threats’, which include disinformation, a phenomenon that, he stressed, requires “constant deep reflection”.
