SPAIN MADE light of injured world No1 Rafael Nadal’s absence to claim its third Davis Cup victory in Argentina.

Fernando Verdasco turned out to be the hero for the 2000 and 2004 men’s team tennis world champions, entering the fray after compatriot Feliciano Lopez had cancelled out David Nalbandian’s opening singles rubber lead. Perhaps best known for his liaison with Serbian women’s No1 Ana Ivanovic, Verdasco partnered Lopez to a narrow doubles victory before delivering the decisive 6-3, 6-7, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 fourth rubber blow against Jose Acasuso.
